How to spot a cannabis factory

Would you know how to spot a cannabis factory?

Like this one in Staines officers uncovered in 2023, cannabis factories can be hidden away behind any door, in any town. We think you’d be surprised at just where they turn up – don’t let appearances fool you!

So what does a cannabis factory look like, why are they a problem, and how can you spot the signs and report them to police?

Below are some of the signs that a property might be operating as a cannabis factory:

  • Curtains constantly drawn, even during hot weather
  • Condensation on windows – cannabis needs greenhouse-like conditions to grow
  • Strong odours coming from the property – cannabis has a potent smell, and the plants may smell stronger in the final weeks of growth
  • Occupants seen only rarely or never at all
  • Visitors at odd times of the day and night
  • Excessive security measures like extra locks or window grilles
  • Lots of plant growing equipment such as soil, fertiliser, and garden waste being taken in and out of the property
  • Buzz of ventilation – a constant noise that could be fans ventilating the property
  • Very high electricity bill (for landlords)
  • Cannabis factories can be very dangerous and pose a serious fire risk due to the electricity they need to run. Often this bypasses the electricity meter and leaves a lot of exposed cables and wiring, with the circuits running close to water-filled pipes.

The amount of electricity used can also destabilise your local power grid and cause electrical outages, and cannabis plants grown upstairs can also cause floorboards to rot and be in danger of collapsing.

Cannabis factories are connected to organised crime groups, which are involved in crimes such as human trafficking and exploitation.

So now you know the signs to spot, does any of this sound familiar?

If reading this list has reminded you of a house or flat or building near you, it’s possible they could be involved in the cultivation and supply of cannabis.
